Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about what we do, what we can find, and what we can't.
What is a mileage blocker?
A mileage blocker is a device, usually hidden behind the dash or connected to the vehicle's wiring, that stops the car from recording some or all of the distance it travels. Unlike a one-off rollback, it can keep the odometer artificially low for months or years. Read more in our article What is a mileage blocker?.
Can you really detect a blocker after it's been removed?
Often, yes — but not always. Removal can leave physical evidence (trim damage, disturbed fasteners, spliced or taped wiring) and electronic evidence (mileage that disagrees between modules, gaps in recorded data, or wear that doesn't fit the number). We'll tell you how strong the evidence is either way.
Isn't a CARFAX report enough?
A history report can only flag a rollback if a true, higher reading was recorded somewhere before it. A car that's had a blocker fitted since new, or whose records are thin, can show a perfectly clean report. That's why we include CARFAX as one input alongside physical and diagnostic checks.
Why CARFAX rather than carVertical?
For cars that have lived in the US, CARFAX has the most service and registration records to check against. If a vehicle has been imported or spent time abroad, we'll add a carVertical report on request.
Where do you travel?
Anywhere in the lower 48 states is covered by the standard fee. Alaska and Hawaii are available on request.
How quickly can you get there?
Usually within 1–3 days of booking, subject to the seller making the car available. If you're working against a deadline, call us before you book.
Can you inspect more than one car?
Yes. Each additional vehicle at the same location is $500.
Who carries out the inspections?
Our founder, who has more than 34 years in the motor trade — buying, selling, financing and running a large sales department — and hands-on technical experience with instrument clusters and the aftermarket devices fitted to them. See About.
What if the seller won't allow an inspection?
That's worth knowing in itself. If access is refused before we've booked travel, you'll get a full refund under our terms.
Do you do a full mechanical inspection too?
Every visit includes a basic pre-purchase inspection: fault-code scan, road test, fluids, visible leaks, brakes, suspension, tires and body. Our specialism is mileage; for a full mechanical teardown on a specialist vehicle we can recommend a marque specialist.
What do I get at the end?
A photo-led written report, a clear verdict (Consistent, Inconclusive or Inconsistent), the CARFAX report, and a call to walk you through it.
Can you guarantee the car hasn't been tampered with?
No honest inspector can. Sophisticated tampering can be very difficult to detect and some vehicles retain little stored mileage data. What we guarantee is a thorough, independent, evidence-based inspection and a straight answer about what we found.
How do I pay?
By card through our secure Revolut checkout. We never see or store your card details.
Do you work for dealers?
Yes — we offer stock audits and pre-acquisition checks for dealers, lenders, auction buyers and exporters, priced on application. See For Dealers.
Don't sign until you know the real miles.
One flat fee. We fly to the car, anywhere in the lower 48.
